How to Add Color Swatches to Shopify Collection Pages
Set up color and image swatches on Shopify collection pages so shoppers can compare variants and linked products without opening every product.
What You Will Set Up
This guide shows how to add color or image swatches to Shopify collection pages with Supra Swatch Colors. The result is simple: a shopper can see available colors while browsing a collection, then choose a variant or move to the related product without opening every product card first.
You need an active Shopify store, products with consistent color information, and access to install apps. Before you begin, decide whether each color is a variant of one product or a separate product page. That distinction determines the setup you will use.
Install Supra Swatch Colors from the Shopify App Store before continuing.

Step 1: Audit Your Product Structure
Open a collection that should show swatches and inspect three to five products. For each product, answer one question: does selecting a color change the variant on the same product page, or should it open another product page?
Use variant swatches when a product has options such as Color, Finish, or Pattern inside one Shopify product. Use linked-product swatches when each color or style lives as its own product, often because it has its own URL, media, inventory, or merchandising copy.
Expected result: each product you plan to display has a clear swatch model. Do not mix models for the same product family unless you have a deliberate reason; that creates confusing shopper behavior.
Step 2: Normalize the Color Option Names
In Shopify Admin, open the products you identified and make their option names consistent. If your theme or app setup expects a color option, Color should not become Colours on one item and Shade on another without a plan. Keep the values consistent too: Forest Green, Forest green, and Green - Forest may all represent the same choice, but they are harder to manage as a group.
Supra Swatch Colors can auto-detect store colors or use product images, which can speed up setup. It is still worth giving the data a quick cleanup first. Better option names make it easier to scale swatches across many products and multilingual storefronts.
Expected result: Shopify variants are ready to map cleanly to swatch colors or images.

Step 3: Choose the Swatch Type
Open the Supra Swatch Colors app and configure the option you want to display. Choose a color swatch when the choice can be represented honestly by a color. Choose an image swatch when texture, print, or material matters more than a single color value.
Avoid making a visual swatch look more precise than the product. A flat blue circle may be fine for a straightforward blue variant; it is less useful for a marbled fabric or an item where the supplied image is the real decision aid.
The app supports customizable swatch size, shape, labels, tooltips, and styles, so match the control to the store’s design rather than treating it as decoration.
Expected result: selecting an option in the app shows the intended color or image representation.
Step 4: Configure Linked Products When Needed
For separate product pages, create a product group inside the app and connect each related product. Add the relevant swatch value for every member of the group. Check the destination for each swatch: it should take the shopper to the correct product page, not an unrelated variant or a collection.
This is the setup to use when a color is sold as its own Shopify product. It preserves separate product URLs while making the family feel connected to the customer. If you are deciding whether separate products or variants are the right model, this earlier guide on organizing Shopify variants and linked products with color swatches is a useful comparison.
Expected result: every swatch in a linked group opens the correct related product.
Step 5: Enable Collection Page Swatches
In the app’s display settings, enable swatches for collection pages. Then open the Shopify theme editor and verify that the app integration is enabled for the collection product cards. Supra Swatch Colors supports product and collection pages across Shopify themes without requiring you to edit theme code.
Preview the collection in a private browser window. Confirm that swatches appear beneath or alongside the correct product cards, that they load quickly, and that the card layout still works on a narrow screen.
Expected result: shoppers can see available choices from the collection grid instead of discovering colors only after they open a product page.

Step 6: Test the Shopper Journey
Test at least four paths before rolling the setting out across the catalog:
- Select a variant swatch from a collection card.
- Select a linked-product swatch from a collection card.
- Open the product page after each selection.
- Test the same paths on a phone.
The expected result is predictable navigation: a variant selection behaves like a variant choice, while a linked-product selection takes the shopper to the intended product URL. The labels and tooltips should remain understandable when the swatch color is subtle or similar to another option.

Troubleshooting Common Issues
A swatch is missing: Check that the option value exists on the product or that the linked product is included in the correct group.
A swatch opens the wrong product: Review the linked-product mapping and make sure product titles or option values were not changed after setup.
Collection swatches look crowded: Reduce the displayed options, adjust the swatch size, or use a tooltip for longer color names. Test the mobile collection grid before changing the desktop layout.
Swatches appear on the product page but not collections: Return to the app’s collection-page display setting, then check the collection card integration in the theme editor.

Next Step
Start with one high-traffic collection and one well-organized product family. Once the variant and linked-product behavior is correct, apply the pattern to the rest of the catalog.
Supra Swatch Colors supports color and image swatches, linked products, multilingual stores, and collection-page display. Install it from the Shopify App Store and turn the next collection browse into a clearer color-first shopping path.
