What You Will Build

A useful product page answers questions before a shopper has to hunt, scroll, or contact support. The trouble starts when every answer—materials, measurements, care, shipping, compatibility, and warranty—lands in one long description. This guide shows how to turn that wall of information into a repeatable Shopify content system: tabs where there is room, and easy-to-tap accordions where there is not.

You need access to your Shopify theme and the product content you want to organize. Supra Tabs & Accordions is a free Shopify app that handles the presentation layer; it does not replace or rewrite the underlying product content.

A Shopify product information plan arranged as ordered content panels

Step 1: Map the Questions Shoppers Need Answered

Start with one representative product page and list the questions a shopper must answer before purchasing. For many catalogs, the first useful sections are:

  1. Overview or details
  2. Specifications, dimensions, or ingredients
  3. Care, installation, or compatibility
  4. Shipping, returns, and warranty
  5. FAQs

Keep labels short and concrete. “Materials & Care” tells a shopper more than “Additional Information.” If your catalog uses options such as size or color, check that the details support the choice a shopper is making. The same planning discipline helps when you choose the right measurements for a Shopify size chart: name the information the customer needs, then put it where they can find it.

Expected result: you have a small set of reusable section names, plus a note of which information changes by product.

Step 2: Separate Reusable Content From Product-Specific Content

Do not duplicate store-wide policy copy into every description. Decide where each section should draw its content:

  • Use the product description for a short product-specific overview.
  • Use product metafields for details such as material, dimensions, ingredients, or compatibility.
  • Use store pages for shared shipping, returns, or warranty guidance.
  • Use metaobject fields when you maintain structured reusable content.
  • Use an image or downloadable file when a care guide, size sheet, or specification document genuinely helps.

This split keeps the product page current without turning a routine policy edit into a catalog-wide task. It also gives you a better basis for product imagery and variants. If your collection uses visual option chips, pair this content audit with a swatch consistency check across product and collection pages.

Expected result: each planned section has one source of truth, so a future update happens in one place.

Step 3: Build One Tab Set Around Those Sources

In Supra Tabs & Accordions, create a tab set and add the sections from your map. A section can pull from a product description, metafield, store page, metaobject entry, image or file, or written content entered in the app.

Use the live product preview while you build. Check the content order on a real product—not just a perfect sample—because long specifications and sparse products expose different problems. The app hides empty tabs when a product has no matching content, which is helpful when one set needs to serve a varied collection.

Avoid making every section a tab. A product with two short details may need no extra structure; a product with six meaningful subjects benefits from it. The goal is scanability, not a decorative interface.

Expected result: your preview shows only relevant sections and the labels read like shopper questions.

Product details transforming from desktop tabs to mobile accordions

Step 4: Choose Desktop Tabs and Mobile Accordions Deliberately

On a wide product column, horizontal tabs let shoppers jump between topics without a long page. On a narrow column, accordions provide larger tap targets and preserve vertical reading flow. Supra Tabs & Accordions responds to the actual product-page column rather than screen width alone, so a narrow layout inside a desktop theme can still receive the compact treatment.

Review the overflow behavior too. If labels do not fit, choose horizontal scrolling, a More control, wrapping rows, or stacked sections. Do not compress labels into unreadable abbreviations just to force one row. The app also includes keyboard support, appropriate roles, reduced motion, and direct links to individual tabs—useful details when product information needs to be usable for more people.

Expected result: tab labels remain readable, and the mobile preview has comfortable sections to tap.

Step 5: Target the System Without Rebuilding It Per Product

Choose where the tab set applies: a collection, tag, vendor, product type, or a selected list of products. Use broad rules for shared structures and narrow rules only for true exceptions. For example, an apparel collection might share Details, Fit, Care, and Shipping, while a technical product type adds Compatibility.

Before saving, review the match count and any overlap warnings. When rules overlap, the app identifies which set wins. That check prevents a carefully built set from quietly being replaced by a more general rule.

A reusable system is especially valuable as your catalog changes. The same principle applies to media operations: before a large release, run a Shopify size chart audit before a collection launch so a shared rule does not hide a missing detail.

Expected result: you can explain exactly which products receive the tab set and why.

Step 6: Add the App Block Once and Test a Small Set of Products

Add the Supra Tabs & Accordions theme app block to the Shopify product template once. Then test at least three products: one with every field filled, one with a few empty optional fields, and one that matches a different targeting rule. Open the page on a phone, use the keyboard on desktop, and confirm that direct tab links land on the intended section.

Check the content itself as well. If a size or product option still causes uncertainty, test Shopify swatches before an international color launch before you scale the pattern to more collections.

Expected result: the product template has one app block, sections appear only when useful, and no product requires a manual theme-code edit.

Common Pitfalls

  • Repeating the same copy in several places: keep shared policies on a page or structured source.
  • Using vague labels: give each section a job shoppers recognize.
  • Ignoring empty states: test products with incomplete optional information.
  • Targeting rules that overlap accidentally: review the winner before publishing.
  • Treating mobile as a shrunken desktop: inspect the actual product column and tap targets.

Next Action

Choose one collection with crowded descriptions, map its five most important shopper questions, and create a single tab set for it. Install Supra Tabs & Accordions to organize that content without adding theme code or per-product setup. The app is free, with no trial, tiers, or card requirement. Once the first collection is clear, reuse the same content model wherever it fits.
